Nanotechnology for biomedicine Platform is an approach based on the design and production of recombinant multi-functional proteins in bacterial cell factories, to be used as targeted delivery systems for active molecules such nucleic acids, peptides or protein based-drugs. These modular proteins can offer several advantages compared with other delivery systems approaches and have a wide number of applications in several fields.
The option of putting together different functions in a single recombinant protein usually leads to a notable functionality simplification and manufacturing cost reductions. Innovative products can be obtained for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and medical sectors.
is currently working on a multi-functional drug delivery system (drug carriers) as well as on a multiple-peptide recombinant protein for medical use. Other applications are under study.
There is a remarkable amount of research worldwide directed at improving drug and DNA & RNA delivery in order to overcome low efficiency and adverse effect problems of some current therapies.
One innovative approach is the use of multi-functional nanoparticles that show some virus-like functions as a targeted delivery system. This approach intends to offer specific delivery without biological risks linked to viral systems.
is currently engaged in a project to design and produce a non- invasive targeted delivery system based on proteins which is based on coupling a multi-functional protein with a polymer attached to a conventional drug. |
